Daenerys Targaryen Returns in Game of Thrones RTS War for Westeros

Daenerys Targaryen is coming back to the Game of Thrones franchise, but not on screen. Playside Studios' real-time strategy game Game of Thrones: War for Westeros premiered its latest trailer at Gamescom Opening Night Live last month, and the footage confirmed that the Mother of Dragons, modeled after Emilia Clarke's portrayal on the HBO series, will be among the characters a player can field as an army leader. The trailer also unveiled the Night King as a playable leader, alongside Jon Snow, Robb Stark, and Jaime Lannister, and showed the best look yet at the game's epic battles.

The trailer appeared to confirm a hook built around the series' central prize: once a player's army wins a match, their leader gets to sit on the Iron Throne. For Daenerys in particular, that outcome amounts to a form of wish fulfillment. In the final season of the show, she was minutes away from claiming the throne when Jon Snow killed her, and her dragon Drogon melted the throne after her death. War for Westeros lets players rewrite that ending, depending on which army they command.

The announcement lands as the franchise, whose flagship series ended in 2019, pushes into new formats. Two prequel shows have already aired seasons on HBO this year: House of the Dragon, which chronicles the end of the Targaryen dynasty and is expected to conclude with a fourth and final season in 2028, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which will get a second season inspired by George R.R. Martin's novella The Sworn Sword, scheduled to premiere in 2027.

The expansion extends beyond television. A Royal Shakespeare Company stage production titled Game of Thrones: The Mad King premiered over the summer and is set to transfer to London next year. Warner Bros. Pictures is also developing a theatrical movie inspired by the Aegon's Conquest storyline from Martin's first prequel book, Fire & Blood.

Those onscreen projects are set in eras that predate Daenerys and most of her contemporaries, which is where War for Westeros fills the gap. Polygon notes that while the new stories may not include Daenerys and other characters from her era, the game will be there to keep them in play. The trailer's Iron Throne mechanic suggests the game is leaning into the fan service of letting players crown characters whose claims ended badly in the original series.

Playside Studios has not yet announced a release date for War for Westeros, and details on how the leader system and Iron Throne victory condition will work in practice remain limited to what the trailer showed. The game's full roster of playable leaders has also not been confirmed beyond the five characters named in the footage.
