Meccha Chameleon, Steam's 20M-seller hide-and-seek hit, comes to Switch 2 today
Meccha Chameleon, the indie hide-and-seek game that has sold over 20 million copies on Steam since launching a couple of months ago, is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 today. Nintendo announced the port during its September 9 Direct, and it is the game's first console release, arriving on the eShop the same day it was revealed (s1, s2).
The game casts players as chameleons who paint themselves to blend into their surroundings on a map while other players hunt them with shotguns. It was designed around mouse and keyboard controls, and the Switch 2 port will let players use the Joy-Con's mouse mode, which Nintendo and the developers said will suit the game's core mechanic (s2). According to the developers in the game's official Discord server, the port will support crossplay with the PC version and will be sold at a discount during its first week on the eShop (s2).
Meccha Chameleon has been one of the fastest-selling games of the year on PC. Eurogamer reported that it topped 15 million sales in less than a month, and Kotaku noted that at one point more than 340,000 players were in the game simultaneously (s1, s2). The viral success has drawn imitators in Roblox and Fortnite, while the original has retained a large dedicated audience (s2).
The game's run has not been entirely smooth. Eurogamer noted that user-made maps on the Steam version were found to contain malware, an issue that was resolved fairly quickly but marred what had otherwise been a positive stretch for the hit (s1). The outlet added that it doubts the Switch 2 version will see similar user-made maps (s1).
Meccha Chameleon is the latest in a string of low-priced social co-op multiplayer hits that includes REPO, Lethal Company, and Among Us, and it is priced accordingly on PC, currently available for £5.29 on Steam (s1). Eurogamer said it would report the Switch 2 price once confirmed (s1).
The Switch 2 port arrives alongside a slate of other announcements from the same Direct, including Monster Hunter Wilds coming to the console later this year with local co-op, and Star Fox Adventures joining the Switch 2's GameCube collection today, bringing that library to 11 titles (s3, s4). No other console ports of Meccha Chameleon have been announced (s2).
One of the year's biggest indie hits makes its first move beyond PC, testing whether its viral Steam success translates to a console audience.
