Mod brings Nvidia's Multi Frame Generation to RTX 30 GPUs

Modders have brought Nvidia's Multi Frame Generation to RTX 30 series graphics cards, a feature the company officially restricts to its RTX 50 series GPUs. A new GitHub download called DLSSG SM86 lets owners of the older cards enable the frame rate-boosting technology, which was previously impossible on that hardware.

The modification works by adding two extra files to a supported game's executable folder, which is enough to make frame generation options appear in the game's graphics settings. The mod supports 2x, 3x and 4x multipliers. YouTube videos already show the hack in action, with the technology appearing to work as Nvidia intended on newer hardware; PCGamesN cites a Cyberpunk 2077 demo running on an RTX 3080 as particularly convincing.

The move follows recent modder work bringing unofficial DLSS 5 neural rendering technology to older GPUs stretching back to the RTX 30 series, which PCGamesN says has dominated attention over the last couple of weeks. Multi Frame Generation had remained unsupported on some ageing Nvidia cards until this new download.

Nvidia does not endorse the modification. The straightforward nature of the fix raises the question of why the company has not brought the support to RTX 30 cards officially, and also to the RTX 40 series, which officially supports standard frame generation but not Multi Frame Generation.

The unofficial addition arrives as many PC gamers hold onto their graphics cards longer while prices for the newest GPUs keep climbing. According to a recent Steam hardware survey, the five-year-old RTX 3060 remains the most popular GPU on the platform, so the mod should find no shortage of takers.

What remains unclear is whether Nvidia will respond to the mod with any enforcement or whether the company will reconsider official support for older architectures. The mod's long-term stability across different games and driver updates is also unverified, as is any performance or visual quality difference compared with native RTX 50 series implementation.

Why it matters

A simple mod extends an RTX 50-exclusive DLSS feature to millions of older RTX 30 cards, pressuring Nvidia to explain why it withholds the technology from hardware that can apparently run it.
