Modders improve DLSS 5 performance before Nvidia's own fix lands
Nvidia launched DLSS 5 on September 3 alongside NBA 2K27, the only game that officially supports the new AI rendering tech so far. Nvidia says the system, available on all RTX 50-series products and GeForce NOW, brings "Hollywood-grade" realism, with light passing naturally through player ears and skin and preserving facial geometry scanned from real athletes.
The tech has drawn criticism for altering in-game visuals. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang called the complaints "completely wrong," and the company says DLSS 5 is "AI extending graphics," not replacing them.
Days after launch, modders have already addressed a bigger issue: performance. DSOGaming reports DLSS 5 is demanding and, in its current state, depends on output resolution rather than internal render resolution. The DLSS 5 Autopilot mod, built with add-ons from matiasLombo and jlrouzies-fr, runs the DLSS 5 network at render resolution before the game's upscaler kicks in, adding Quality, Balance, and Performance modes that can significantly improve frame rates. The same tools let players inject DLSS 5 into DX12, DX11, DX10, and Vulkan games that lack native support.
Nvidia says it is working on improving DLSS 5 performance itself. Modded results can carry flickering and visual artifacts.
Community mods are delivering performance fixes and universal game support for DLSS 5 before Nvidia ships its own optimization, showing the gap between the tech's launch state and what players want.
