Nintendo Direct reveals Metroid Ravenous, Bloober's Onyx for Switch 2 winter line-up

Nintendo capped a two-day run of September showcases with a roughly 45-minute Direct on Wednesday focused on games arriving this winter, headlined by a new 2D Metroid and a surprise horror exclusive from Bloober Team. The show followed Tuesday's 40th anniversary Legend of Zelda presentation and covered first-party and third-party titles due on Switch 2 over the coming months, including release dates for Monster Hunter Wilds and the concluding Final Fantasy remake entry.

The Direct's biggest reveal was Metroid Ravenous, the next 2D side-scrolling Metroid and an apparent sequel to Mercury Steam's Metroid Dread. The debut trailer showed Samus attacked by enemies that drain her energy, with the bounty hunter displaying a darker side and telling an opponent, "It's eat or be eaten." Nintendo confirmed the game launches exclusively on Switch 2 on 28th January 2027, and it will ship with a special edition and two new amiibo figures. The game had previously surfaced through a ratings board listing in Brazil, according to Eurogamer.

Bloober Team, the studio behind the Silent Hill 2 Remake and Cronos: The New Dawn, unveiled Onyx: The Dark Grip, a horror game coming exclusively to Switch 2 next year though without a specific release window. The game casts players as Holden, a man drawn into a fog-shrouded town by a voice, where he investigates by exploring and reading the minds of people he meets. Unusually, Onyx requires handheld play, with its reveal trailer showing touchscreen and tilt mechanics. Bloober had previously said it was working on a Switch 2 exclusive, and the project marks a return to smaller-scope development after several larger releases.

Elsewhere, Nintendo confirmed Monster Hunter Wilds arrives on Switch 2 on 4th December, with its Ascendance expansion following next year. Final Fantasy Resonance, the third and concluding part of the Final Fantasy remake saga, hits the console on 8th April 2027, while Crisis Core Final Fantasy 7 Reunion comes to Switch 2 later on Wednesday. Koei Tecmo's Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity is getting a Definitive Edition on 25th February 2027, promising 60fps support, more enemies on screen, all expansion pass content, and a tougher Calamity mode, with a digital discount for owners of the Switch 1 version. The Switch 2 remake of Star Fox 64 is also receiving a free update adding four-player split-screen support.

The Direct came after days of speculation, with Kotaku reporting that rumors ahead of the show included a new Nintendogs title and that one leaker had deleted their YouTube comments in the run-up. The show itself did not dwell on the Zelda Ocarina of Time remake announced the previous day, which had received a mixed reception online following its reveal.

Nintendo has not detailed the full breadth of the winter line-up beyond what aired, and specific dates for several announced titles, including Onyx: The Dark Grip, remain unconfirmed. The publisher is expected to fill in release windows for the remaining games in the coming weeks.
