Onimusha: Way of the Sword sells 1 million in a day, reviving dormant Capcom series

Capcom said Onimusha: Way of the Sword sold over one million copies across all platforms in its first day of release, making the dormant action series' return an immediate hit. The game launched September 4 on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Switch 2. On Steam it peaked at 85,081 concurrent players and ranks among the platform's best-selling titles, according to SteamDB figures cited by Eurogamer.

Way of the Sword is the first new mainline Onimusha entry in 20 years. It stars Miyamoto Musashi, modeled on the late actor Toshiro Mifune, battling Genma demons in an Edo-period Kyoto. VGC notes the day-one total puts the game roughly halfway to surpassing 2002's Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny, the series' best seller at 2.1 million units. The franchise has now passed 10 million lifetime sales.

Capcom tied the launch to a stated push to revive older properties. "Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven't had a new title launch recently," the publisher said. Next up is Mega Man, returning in 2027 with Dual Override. Reviews were broadly positive, with critics praising the swordplay and its avoidance of common Soulslike tropes.

Why it matters

The day-one million-seller validates Capcom's strategy of reviving dormant franchises and signals more old series, starting with Mega Man, are on the way.
