PlayStation reportedly reviving Killzone with early remake work

PlayStation is reportedly planning to revive the Killzone series, with a remake or remaster in early development, according to MP1st as relayed by VGC. The report claims original developer Guerrilla Games is working with an external studio on the project, which could be a revamp of the 2004 original.

The Killzone project was said to be Guerrilla's next focus after Horizon Hunter's Gathering, but plans shifted after the alleged decision to delay that project and pivot away from live service. Most of Guerrilla's staff are currently said to be working on the multiplayer game, with part of the team likely switching to Killzone after Hunter's Gathering ships and the rest focusing on Horizon 3.

Killzone was once a flagship PlayStation franchise, with six installments across PS3, PS4 and handhelds in the nine years after its 2004 debut. The series has had no proper release since 2013's PS4 launch title Killzone: Shadow Fall, as Guerrilla turned to Horizon. In 2017, then-Guerrilla boss Hermen Hulst, now PlayStation's studios head, said it was too early to announce whether the series had ended permanently, while affirming the studio still loved the Killzone universe.
