Portal: Alive & Kicking, a full remake of Valve's Portal in the Portal 2 engine, is out on Steam

Rhubarb & Rhubarb has released Portal: Alive & Kicking, a full remake and reimagining of Valve's original Portal built in the Portal 2 engine. The game retells the story of Chell and GLaDOS, updated to account for the retcons and visual additions of the sequel. It launched on Steam on August 28, 2026, after the developer said it had signed an agreement with Valve but heard nothing for months before release.
The remake adds gameplay and visual enhancements, from improved puzzle cues to a redesigned visual style, plus an original dynamic soundtrack blending Portal's drones with Portal 2's reactive scoring. It includes the original campaign and its Advanced chambers, with the developer saying additional content may come free later.
Players must own Portal 2, installed in the same Steam library folder, since this is not a standalone mod. Linux users need Proton, as no native build exists; it reportedly runs well under Proton 11. The developer is working through store issues where the add or play button does not appear, and SteamDB's launch button offers a workaround.
The release shows how a fan remake can ship through Valve's platform as a Portal 2 add-on, requiring ownership of the base game rather than standing alone.
