Report: Next StarCraft game won't be a Destiny-style live service shooter

Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier says the rumored next StarCraft game should not be expected to play like a Destiny-style live service shooter, pushing back on one of the leading theories about the project. "I wouldn't count on this StarCraft game being a Destiny-like, I'll say that," Schreier said in a chat with former Polygon producer Ryan Gilliam, without elaborating further.

The comments follow reports that Korean developer-publisher Nexon acquired the rights to develop a sequel in the sci-fi franchise, and the official StarCraft 2 website recently began displaying visual glitches that suggest an announcement is near.

Windows Central editor Jez Corden offered a different comparison, writing on X that the project looks "more Space Marine 2 / Far Cry kinda adjacent, but dunno for sure what the overall gameplay formula will be." The Far Cry reference is notable because former Far Cry boss Dan Hay has long been reported to be leading a StarCraft shooter at Blizzard, though Blizzard itself appears not to be building this particular game. Corden's two reference points share little in common, leaving the project's actual shape unclear.
