Rockstar faces final tribunal over firing 31 GTA 6 staff who unionised
Rockstar Games faces a final employment tribunal hearing this week over its firing of 31 Rockstar North employees who joined a union, a case that will run until mid-October, just over a month before Grand Theft Auto 6's release.
The Independent Workers Union of Great Britain alleges Rockstar "unlawfully" dismissed the workers and "blacklisted" them for unionising. Rockstar tried to have the claims thrown out earlier this year, but the tribunal ruled against it. The hearing begins Thursday, 10th September and runs through 16th October.
The IWGB seeks reinstatement or compensation for the workers, plus a tribunal finding that their dismissals were unfair. The case arrives two weeks after GTA 6's Netflix reveal and months before the game's launch.
"For almost a year, the truth about what happened to us has been buried by Rockstar and surrounded by speculation. Now we finally get the chance to put it on the record," said former Rockstar employee Jason Lewis. "None of us imagined that talking to each other about our working conditions would turn our lives upside down and catapult us into the case."
The tribunal outcome could set a precedent for unionisation and dismissal practices across the UK games industry while running through the final weeks before GTA 6's launch.
