South Park creators rename show South America in jab at Trump, Paramount
Trey Parker and Matt Stone are renaming South Park to South America, nearly 30 years after the show's debut. The creators announced the change Tuesday in an official statement that mocked President Donald Trump's executive orders renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario, along with tech companies that complied.
"Inspired by the bravery and patriotism of Apple and Google, we are changing the name of South Park to SOUTH AMERICA. We especially want to thank our parent company Paramount, a Skydance Capitulation," Parker and Stone said.
The show's X and Instagram accounts have already been renamed to South America, though they keep the @southpark handle. It is unclear whether the town, the series title, or both will carry the new name, and whether the change will stick.
The 29th season premieres Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 10 p.m. on Comedy Central, with episodes streaming on Paramount Plus. South Park turns 30 next year. Trump has been a recurring target in recent seasons; in Seasons 27 and 28, the show depicted Trump having sex with and impregnating Satan.
The stunt extends South Park's recent political satire into a public rebuke of its own parent company and the tech giants that adopted Trump's geographic renamings.
