Valheim 1.0 launches after 5 years in Early Access with final Deep North biome

Iron Gate Studio released Valheim 1.0 on September 9, 2026, ending roughly five years of Early Access for the viking-themed open-world survival game. The full launch adds the Deep North biome, the last of the game's regions, completing the map that players have been exploring since the game first hit Steam in early access in 2021.

The Deep North is the centerpiece of the 1.0 update, and the developers have signaled it is not a small addition. Iron Gate said the biome is "approximately 2.5 times bigger than any of the previous Valheim biomes, and not just in size," a description that points to new systems and content layered on top of the larger landmass. The update brings new armor, tools, and enemies to go with the expanded territory.

Iron Gate also worked with animation studio Brikk Animation on a new cinematic meant to introduce new players to the world of Valheim. The 1.0 release adds cinematics that play when players slay bosses throughout the game, plus a secret extra cinematic that the studio has left for players to find on their own.

The launch caps a long development arc for a game that became a breakout hit early in its access period. Valheim's core loop remains intact in the 1.0 release: a procedurally generated world split into distinct biomes, each with its own enemies, resources, and crafting recipes. Players can go it alone or host dedicated servers for up to 10 players, with enemies that scale in difficulty. Combat is stamina-based and rewards preparation, with weapon types that carry unique attacks, multiple blocking styles, ranged options, dodges, and parries.

The game's survival systems are built around a food mechanic that grants health, stamina, and regeneration buffs depending on what players eat, rather than punishing them for going hungry. Crafting recipes unlock as players explore and collect new resources, and the building system accounts for structural integrity and ventilation, letting players construct anything from a small shelter to a full village or claim abandoned buildings. Boats and ships carry players across the sea, where they can claim riches or fight monsters, and boss fights offer rewards that carry the player forward.

The 1.0 milestone arrives after years of incremental updates that added biomes and systems piecemeal during Early Access. With the Deep North now in place, the full map is playable from start to finish, and the new intro cinematic gives fresh players a guided entry into a game that previously dropped them into the world with little direction. The boss-slayer cinematics and the hidden extra one give returning players reasons to revisit fights they have already cleared.

What remains unclear is what comes after 1.0. Iron Gate has not detailed post-launch plans, and the studio has not said whether the Deep North represents the end of new biome content or the start of a new phase of support for the finished game.

Why it matters

Valheim's 1.0 release closes out one of the most successful Early Access survival games of the decade, delivering the final Deep North biome and a complete version of a game that has shaped the genre since 2021.
